The presence of protected species on a proposed development site can be a major constraint to a project as some development activities may need to be licensed. To avoid possible costly delays to the development works programme and alterations to design plans we recommend protected species surveys (if required) are carried out at the earliest opportunity.

We can carry out a variety of protected species surveys:

We have the skills and experience to carry out protected species surveys following standard methodologies. We and our associates hold Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and Scottish Natural Heritage survey licences for many protected species, including bats, barn owl, hazel dormouse, great crested newt, lesser silver water beetle, otter and white-clawed crayfish, smooth snake and sand lizard.

Many protected species surveys are best carried out or can only be carried out at certain times of year (see our Ecological Surveys Timetable).

If protected species are found on the proposed development site we can provide the following:

  • Legal compliance advice (including licensing).
  • Licence applications including European Protected Species (EPS) mitigation licences.
  • Design mitigation measures to avoid/ minimise the chances of harming species on the site.
  • Design compensation and enhancement measures to provide long-term benefits for species on and off the development site.
  • On-site and off-site mitigation and compensation works (including species translocation and habitat creation) (see Mitigation and Compensation Design and Implementation).
  • Site management and monitoring.

We have held Natural England disturbance licences for badger and hold current European Protected Species mitigation licences (EPS) for bats.
