Pipistrellus pipistrellus

Whilst conducting a recent dawn swarming bat survey for Derbyshire County Council in Ashover, Derbyshire Udall-Martin Associates bat workers witnessed the site of a Rook (Corvus frugilegus) capturing a common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) as it came back to roost. The rook knew exactly where the bat was going to be coming home to roost at dawn and sat perched ready to pounce, just as the pipistrelle was about to land on the wall and crawl away to safety the rook pounced and collected the bat in it’s talons and promptly carried it away to the nearest tree to be devoured. Being awake at unsociable hours does have it’s bonuses it has to be said when you witness nature in action like this.
